Vixen 03 Book Review

Vixen 03 is the classic fourth book in Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt series. For those who, like myself, are unacquainted with military lingo, it may be helpful to know that the term "Vixen 03" refers to a military aircraft that has been lost during a top-secret mission. While reading the book many years ago, I never had any clue about the relevance of the title until just now, doing research for this book review.

In 1954, a flight with a deadly cargo of a bacterial doomsday organism is lost on route to military testing grounds in the South Pacific. 34 years later, Dirk Pitt discovers the crashed plane at the bottom of a Colorado mountain lake. However, someone else has already been there. One of the dead bodies discovered in the plane is of much more recent origin.

Pitt also discovers that eight of the shells with the doomsday organism are missing from the wreck, and the race is on to find out where they are, recover them and prevent them from being used as a weapon. He manages to find and neutralize six of the missing shells, but two have gotten into the hands of South African revolutionaries. (Remember, this book is from 1978 before the fall of apartheid.)

A white supremacist named Pieter de Vaal is aware of the rebels' possession of the doomsday weapon and is plotting to capture it from the black freedom fighters and instead use the deadly weapon in a terrorist attack on the U.S. capital, pinning the blame on the black revolutionaries, gaining international support for the white rule of South Africa, and in the process, personally seize control of the country as a one-man dictator.
